How to Grow?

  1. Set up a cold frame in an area of the garden that receives ample light but is shaded from summer afternoon sun. This frame will need to be in place for 18 months, so choose a location where it won't be in the way.
  2. Fill planting trays or nursery pots with sandy soil. In February, plant your tulip seeds, covering them with a thin layer of soil. Place the trays or pots in the cold frame.
  3. Keep the soil moist but not wet. The seeds should germinate by March or April. Thin the seedlings to one plant for every 4 to 6 inches. Keep the soil moist and protect the cold frame from weather extremes.
  4. Leave the seedlings in the cold frame through the sowing year's growing season and winter, then through the following year's growing season. In the seedlings' second autumn, plant them in the garden in loose, sandy soil. Leave 4 to 6 inches of space between the seedlings.
